Scholarships and ProgramsTo involve more young people in the political process and to provide educational opportunities, TARWF annually donates to the following scholarship programs administered through the National Federation of Republican Women The Betty Rendel Scholarship Fund This fund was established in September 1995 by the National Federation of Republican Women in honor of NFRW Past President Betty Rendel's extraordinary leadership skills and dedication to the Republican Party in her home state of Indiana, as well as at the national level. The three annual scholarships of $1,000 are awarded to undergraduates who are majoring in political science, government or economics and have successfully completed at least two years of college coursework. The recipients are chosen from applicants from across the nation. The Dorothy Andrews Kabis Memorial Internship This internship honors the former president of the NFRW (1963-67) who later was appointed U.S.Treasurer by President Richard Nixon. The internship gives young undergraduates the opportunity to spend part of the summer working at National headquarters in Alexandria, VA. It includes a small monetary allowance, roundtrip airfare to and from Washington, D.C., and housing in the D.C. metropolitan area. Applicants must be at least a junior in college or a college student 21 years of age or older. They should have a general knowledge of government, a keen interest in politics, campaign experience, and sufficient clerical office skills that are adaptable to a busy office. National Pathfinder Scholarship This scholarship fund was established in 1985 in honor of First Lady Nancy Reagan. The three annual scholarships of $2,500 provide financial assistance and support to students seeking undergraduate or graduate degrees. Undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as student enrolled in a master's degree program, are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Recent high school graduates and undergraduate freshmen are not eligible. Advocacy Day Program TARWF, in conjunction with the California Federation of Republican Women, sponsors two high school young women to participate in Advocacy Day. These young women are nominated by TARWF members, interviewed and selected by the TARWF Scholarship Chairwoman. Following the suggestions of Ronald Reagan and Republican legislators that CFRW become a viable force in the legislative process, the Federation established an Advocacy Program in 1974 and a full-time lobbyist was hired in 1975. CFRW has evolved into a most effective voice for women involved in government. The program has enabled them to seat many women in political appointments, influence legislation and make Republican women's presence felt. Several hundred women from CFRW throughout the State of California converge on the State Capitol in Sacramento to lobby legislators (Republican and Democrat alike) to sponsor, support or defeat bills which are important to the issues affecting citizens of California. The high school young women who are chosen, participate in legislative action and awareness in our State Capitol. Boys & Girls Club of Tustin TARWF annually supports this local club. In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them. Boys & Girls Clubs offer that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging, and influence. Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow - all while having fun. Operation Interdependence A civilian-to-military delivery system that serves as a program for Americans to demonstrate their support for our regularly scheduled deployed military personnel. The "Adopt-A-Box" Program is "Real people sending real care packages to real heroes." Boxes are sent weekly to troops all over the globe - each box reaches 50 troops on the frontlines with civilian rations (C-rats) to provide them with a touch of home. Volunteers and sponsors put together care packages which consist of varying contents but generally all include items such as candy, dried fruit, cookies, nuts, gum, baby wipes, stationery, and phone cards. The troops especially like letters, sports pages, videos, games, grooming aids and magazines. TARWF regularly sends notes and cards through Operation Interdependence and individual TARWF members sponsor financially and/or by donating items to be shipped out. Books For Kids On January 8, 2002, President George W. Bush signed into law, the "No Child Left Behind Act of 2002". This law gives students a chance, parents a choice, and schools a charge to be the best in the world by: 1) Closing the acheivement gap 2) Providing flexibility to states and school districts 3) Promoting accountability 4) Expanding school and parental choice 5) Promoting charter schools 6)Promoting reading prgrams 7) Improving teacher quality 8) Promoting English fluency 9)Enhancing education technology programs 10) Promoting drug and violence prevention programs 11) Improving math and science education. In accordance with this legislation, TARWF is committed to supplying books to all 18 Tustin Elementary Schools. The "Books For Kids" Chairwoman researches age-appropriate books available and selects one that emphasizes American values and/or history. She visits each elementary school in the district and presents the new volume to the school librarian, usually in front of a classroom of children.
